Whitney Museum of American Art

Art & museums league · enshrined Aug 28, 2026

The Whitney's site runs a museum the way a great front page runs a newsroom: exhibitions lead, the grid holds, and the institution's W folds right into the masthead. American art, presented with total confidence in black and white.

The citation

The wordmark does something few institutions would allow: its zigzag W stretches across the whole header like a gallery wall’s sightline, and every page lives beneath it. Below, the current shows get newspaper treatment — Biennial 2026 at full width, Lichtenstein and Minnie Evans stacked beside it, dates set in the same gray all-caps the museum letters onto its own gallery walls in vinyl.

The vote comes down to discipline under pressure. A museum homepage has to sell tickets, memberships, family programs, podcasts and a collection of 26,000 works at once; this one does it with two typefaces, one column system, and photography allowed to be the only color on the page. It even lends its front door to commissioned net art on the hour, then folds back to order when the piece ends. Institutional gravity, zero stiffness.

The colorway

Five swatches pulled straight from the screenshot. Each pennant leads to its colorway.

The mark, for Whitney Museum of American Art

Fly it on Whitney Museum of American Art if you like — it points visitors back to this plaque. The banner stays up either way.
